Pitching Strapped Mets Lose Wacha to Shoulder Inflammation

The Mets have issues. They are a little more than a quarter of the way through the season, and at 6-9 (entering Sunday's matinee against Miami), the Mets pitching has left a lot to be desired.

Well, it didn't get any better on Sunday when the Mets announced that Michael Wacha will be placed on the 10-day Injury List with inflammation in his right shoulder. According to Manager Luis Rojas, Wacha felt the pain in his shoulder after yielding four runs in five innings to the Miami Marlins on Friday. The Mets are not sure how much time Wacha will miss, which is a concerning statement.

Wacha was 1-2 with a 6.43 in three starts.

What do the Mets do in response? Promote a pitcher? Nope. They promote catcher Ali Sanchez on a team that already has three catchers on the Major League roster. Smart (insert sarcasm).

The Mets are in dire need for pitching. The Mets are already without Marcus Stroman who suffered a torn left calf muscle in summer camp. They are now down to four starting pitchers, and only two of them have been reliable. Jacob deGrom, of course, the ace of this staff, and young David Peterson who has been mighty impressive in his first three major league starts.

That is not enough of course to get a team through a 60-game season. The Mets need to get healthy, or find pitching from somewhere.

Seth Lugo, who has been religated to bullpen duty will once again have his name come up as a guy Rojas and company could insert as a starter, but there doesn't seem to be any real desire by the Mets brass to do just that. Other starting caliber options are Paul Sewald or Corey Oswalt, neither of whom will inspire much confidence in Mets fans.

The trade deadline is August 31. If the Mets are still in the mix come that time would they try to get another starter? The biggest question is do they have any viable options that someone would want in a trade for a starter? And how many teams will truly believe they are out of it in order to give up one of their top starting pitchers to a team like the Mets? All legitimate questions, with no answers at the moment.
