The New York Mets were so close to an NLDS berth, they could taste it.
Unfortunately, everything unraveled in the bottom of the 8th inning, with Phil Maton, a normally reliable reliever, giving up a leadoff homer to Jackson Churio and two-run blast to Garrett Mitchell to give Milwaukee a two-run lead.
Carlos Mendoza removed Sean Manaea after just five innings and 87 pitches. Clearly, leaving Maton in too long and removing Manaea too early cost the Mets dearly.
New York now faces an elimination scenario, with Jose Quintana on the mound facing Tobias Myers.
